Partnering with the
Brazos River Authority (BRA) initially consisted
of an assessment of the Bosque River Watershed (a drainage area
comprising a tributary of the Brazos), which terminates with Lake Waco.
The watershed area covers 4,300 sq. km (1,650 sq. mile) in portions of
six counties. Major issues investigated were sediment and nutrient
sources and relative contributions of these constituents into Lake Waco.
The upper reaches of the watershed have a heavy concentration of
confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs). Nutrients also originate
with the fertilization of cropland concentrated in the lower portion of
the watershed and point sources such as wastewater treatment plants. |
