Project Highlight

Alternative Energy Development

Interest in Wind Farm Development has increased this year since we hosted the Wind Farm informational meetings. The RC&D office gets calls weekly and mails out information to landowners interested in leasing for wind farm development. Two more landowner Information meetings are planned in 2008. The meetings are aimed at educating landowners about wind farm development, leases and how a wind farm can affect Farm Program and conservation programs.

Conservation Education

The plant identification book “Common Rangeland Plants of the Texas Panhandle” continues to grow in popularity. Most colleges and universities in the region are now using the book to supplement their range and wildlife curriculum. The RC&D Council has had the book re-printed in a paperback format. The books can be ordered by calling the North rolling Plains RC&D Office at 806-669-0312

Disaster Relief

The North rolling Plains RC&D helped organize efforts to assist local ranchers and farmers who had fences and property losses due to wildfires. We organized teams of volunteers who went to the ranches to rebuild fences, barns and corrals.

The ranches affected by the wildfire have completed rebuilding fences and a year of rest has resulted in very lush regrowth of the vegetation. In fact, the re-growth has been tremendous due to abundant rains in the spring of 2007. Vegetative cover is tall creating a heavy fuel load for fires in 2008. RC&D is promoting safety and preparation to prevent future fires. “Firewise” publications are available through the RC&D office.
