Clay County Homesite Constructed Wetlands Demonstration

Due to the permeability of the soils in Clay County, residents have been required to install alternative systems for home sewage treatment. The alternative treatment of choice with certified installers is the aerobic treatment plant and spray distribution of effluent.

The county realized the need to provide the residents with a low cost, low maintenance alternative to the “aerobic system” now being offered. Alarmingly, approximately 95 percent of the “aerobic systems” in the county are failing due to neglect of the required maintenance to the systems.

Through the cooperation of Clay County Commissioners Court, Little Wichita Soil and Water Conservation District, Chisholm Trail RC&D Council, Wichita County Public Health District, and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), five of the six homesite constructed wetland demonstration sites have been installed. A workshop was conducted to share installation procedures of these systems with installers and other interested parties.

Current data indicates that the demonstration sites are performing properly using initial test results.
