EQIP Program in Nacogdoches County

Updated 11/28/2005

The Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) offers cost share assistance to agricultural producers to implement on-farm conservation practices.  The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) determines eligible producers for the EQIP program and determines eligible land.  Eligible producers may apply for cost share assistance on conservation practices that will address the identified resource concern identified by the Local Work Group (LWG).

Nacogdoches County Office Information

Interested agricultural producers may apply in person at the Nacogdoches County USDA Service Center. Applicants may also request EQIP assistance by telephone, fax, e-mail, or letter.

State Resource Concerns Priority Areas that include part of Nacogdoches County:

Objective:

The objective of the Nacogdoches County EQIP Local Work Group (LWG) is to promote the use of conservation practices for improving the natural resources throughout the county with major emphasis on plant health.

County EQIP Resource Concern:

In Nacogdoches County for 2006, the LWG has identified Plant Health as the major resource concern. This resource concern is planned to be addressed by providing program assistance and technical assistance management on the improvement of pastureland and forestland. Conservation practices eligible for program assistance are grass planting and legume overseeding on existing pastures, nutrient management for forage establishment, weed control in pastureland with dew berry vines, johnsongrass and McCartney Rsoe targeted in existing pastures, critical area shaping, cross-fencing, installation of pipelines and water troughs, and tree planting.

Eligible Practices and Cost Share Rates:

Cost Share Rate
Limited Resource Producers - Cost share rate set by
NRCS State Office - 90 percent
Begininng Farmers and Ranchers - 50 percent
All Others - 50 percent

Practices will be cost shared based on the actual cost not to exceed a specified maximum,(AM), as per an approved contract.  The amount of cost share earned will be the number of units certified after completion multiplied by the average cost not to exceed the specified maximum average cost multiplied by the cost share rate.  Cost Sharing will be allowed for the following practices as identified in the Field Office Technical guide.

Pasture Planting (512) – Units = Acres, Cost share rate = 50 percent
Average cost for sprigged grasses = $170.00/Acre
Average cost for seeded grasses = $ 70.00/Acre
Average cost for overseeding legumes = $ 65.00/Acre
Includes seedbed preparation and planting.
Nutrient Management (590) - Units = Acres, Cost share rate = 50 percent.
Application rates based on current soil analysis.
Average Cost for Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potash = $85.00/Acre
Average Cost for Lime = $42.00/Ton
Weed Control in Pastures (595) - Units = Acres,
Cost share rate = 50 percent

Average cost for chemical = $20.00/Acre
Average cost for McCartney Rose Control:
1st Year = $45.00/Acre
2nd Year = $45.00/Acre
3rd Year = $20.00/Acre
Critical Eroding Area Treatment (342) – Units = Acres,
Cost share rate = 50 percent
Average cost based on degree and extent of erosion:
Heavy (Ditches > 8 foot depth) = $1000.00/Acre
Medium (Ditches 4-8 foot depth)= $800.00/Acre
Light (Ditches < 4 foot depth) = $600.00/Acre
Includes mechanical shaping
Critical Area Planting (342) - Units = Acres
Vegetation Establishment = $250/Acre
Includes seedbed preparation, planting, nutrients,
and weed control.
Livestock Water Troughs (614) - Units = No.
Average cost per trough = $270.00
Livestock Water Pipelines(516) - Unit = Feet
Average cost per foot of pipeline = $2.00/Foot
Tree Planting (612) - Units = Acres, Cost share rate = 50 percent
Average cost for mechnical site preparation = $280.00/Acre
Average cost for ripping = $ 75.00/Acre
Average cost for chemical site preparation = $ 90.00/Acre
Average cost for banding = $ 55.00/Acre

Average cost for planting hardwood seedlings = $200.00/Acre
Fencing (382) - Units = Feet, Cost share rate = 50 percent
Includes cost of materials and labor
Average cost for cross fencing = $ 1.90/Foot

Program Requirements and Practice considerations

  • Pasture Planting cost share is only eligible on fields with <50  percent desirable forage and/or ground cover. Only perennial grasses eligible for cost shares. Nutrient management and Pest management will be included with pasture planting. A current soils test will be required for nutrient management.
  • Tree Planting – Hardwoods and pine.
  • Program assistance for treating johnsongrass, berryvines and McCartney Rose.
  • Livestock grazing deferment required during period clover is reseeding.
  • Fencing – Boundary fences are not eligible. Fences will meet NRCS specifications. Electric fences not eligible.

  • Practices not listed above are not eligible for EQIP Cost Shares
