EQIP Program in Grimes County

Updated 11/29/2005

The Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) offers cost share assistance to agricultural producers to implement on-farm conservation practices.  The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) determines eligible producers for the EQIP program and determines eligible land.  Eligible producers may apply for cost share assistance on conservation practices that will address the identified resource concern identified by the Local Work Group (LWG).

Grimes County Office Information

Interested agricultural producers may apply in person at the Grimes County USDA Service Center. Applicants may also request EQIP assistance by telephone, Fax, e-mail, or letter.

State Resource Concerns Priority Areas that include part of Grimes County:

Objective:

The objective of the Grimes County EQIP is to promote the use of conservation practices for improving the natural resources throughout the county. The major concerns are improving the quality of pasture, rangeland, hayland, and forest land by improving plant health thus reducing erosion.

County EQIP Resource Concern:

In Grimes County for 2006, the LWG has identified the following resource concern as being the top priority for cost share assistance this year -

Plant Health focus will be improving pasture conditions through the use of Pasture Planting on land that has 50  percent or less existing stand of desirable grass, to include nutrient management and pest management for establishment purposes only. Other practices include Brush Management along with pasture and hayland planting when mechanical treatment is used and one year prescribed grazing incentive, Cross-fencing for grazing management, Ponds and Well and Pipeline for rotational grazing only and must include critical area planting for the pond dam and spillway, Heavy Use Protection, Critical Area Planting, and Use Exclusion. In addition, Riparian Forest Buffers and Tree Planting have been added to the practices available for cost share this year.

100  percent of the county allocation will be used for Plant Health.

Limited Resource Farmers and Ranchers will be eligible for 90  percent cost share assistance through funds set aside at the state level for Grimes County based on the same conservation practices as outlined above.  Beginning Farmers and Ranchers will be eligible for 50 percent cost share assistance.

In addition to the county funding, commercial poultry operations or participants approved for the use of litter from poultry operations on agriculture land will be eligible to sign up under Statewide Resource Concern under the Poultry AFO and CAFO Resource Concern

Priority for Funding:

Plant Health will receive 100  percent of the total funds allocated to Grimes County in 2006.

Limited Resource Farmers and Ranchers will be eligible for cost share through additional funds set aside at the state level for use in Grimes County, based on the same resource concerns as stated above.
