EQIP Program in Johnson County

The Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) offers cost share assistance to agricultural producers to implement on-farm conservation practices.  The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) determines eligible producers for the EQIP program and determines eligible land.  Eligible producers may apply for cost share assistance on conservation practices that will address the identified resource concern identified by the Local Work Group (LWG).

Johnson County Office Information

Interested agricultural producers may apply in person at the Johnson County USDA Service Center. Applicants may also request EQIP assistance by telephone, Fax, e-mail, or letter.

Objective:

The objectives of the Johnson County EQIP LWG are to promote the use of conservation practices for improving the natural resources throughout the county. Some of the major resource concerns are poor plant health and diversity, soil erosion due to water, and loss of wildlife habitat.

County EQIP Resource Concern:

The Johnson County LWG has identified the following resource concern to be the top priority for cost-share assistance -

The Primary Resource Concern is Water Quality and the prevention of Sedimentation.

The secondary resource concern is Plant Health Grassland Improvement. This will help control soil erosion which will have a beneficial impact on water quality and wildlife habitat.

Eligible Practices and Cost Share Rates:

County Base Fund
Limited Resource Producers - 90 percent
Beginner Farmer or Rancher - 50 percent
All other Producers -50 percent

The Local Work Group recommends the following practices as eligible for cost-share based on average cost. The eligible practices are –

Primary Resource Concern: Water Quality – Sedimentation

  • Cropland to Grassland (512, 550) – Pasture and Range Planting – This includes seedbed preparation, planting sprigs or seed, nutrient management, and pest management.
  • Parallel Terraces (600). Construction
  •  Grade Stabilization Structure (410) (Earthmoving; Barrel, aluminum; Barrel, plastic; Barrel, steel; Concrete; Site preparation; Critical area planting on dam-seeding)
  • Waterway (412) Shaping and Planting (which includes seedbed preparation, sprigs & sprigging, nutrient management, and pest management).

    Secondary Resource Concern: Plant Health – Grassland Improvement

  • Grassland (<25 percent cover or 15 percent desirable grasses – brush management not needed) Grass Planting (512, 550) – This includes seedbed preparation, planting sprigs or seed, nutrient management, and pest management.
  • Brush Management (314) >15 percent canopy and no grass planting. Individual Plant Treatment. Chemical or mechanical.
  • Brush Management * (314) Root plow. Includes stacking, raking, burning as needed. * Range planting (550) includes seedbed preparation, seeding operation, seed, and pest management.
  • Pasture planting (512) includes seedbed preparation, sprigs & sprigging, nutrient management, and pest management.
  • Brush Management * (314) >50 percent canopy cover - Tree doze. * Range planting (550) includes seedbed preparation, seeding operation, seed, and pest management.
  • Chemical: Broadcast – mesquite and associated species
  • Chemical: Broadcast – prickly pear
  • Brush Management * (314) <50 percent canopy cover - Tree doze. * Range planting (550) includes seedbed preparation, seeding operation, seed, and pest management.
  • Pond (378) – Earthmoving.
  • Cross Fence (382)
