The total estimated area in the watershed is 795,100 acres. This watershed is
located in Concho, Tom Green, Runnels, Schleicher, Coke and Menard Counties in
West Central Texas.
The land uses in this watershed consist of rangeland, dry cropland, irrigated
cropland and pastureland.
The watershed area is in the Edwards Plateau and the Rolling Plains resource areas. The topography
ranges from nearly level to
gently sloping mesquite covered plains in the majority of the watershed to steep
limestone redberry cedar
covered hills in the south. The majority of soils range from deep gently sloping
clays and loams to
areas of shallow and very shallow clay.
Of the 704 operating units in the watershed, the majority are a combination of
cropland, rangeland and pastureland. The average operating unit size is 950
acres.
Total cropland in the watershed comprise about 315,000 acres, with 269,600 in dryland and the remaining 45,400 under irrigation. Primary crops include cotton,
wheat and grain sorghum. Other crops include oats and forage sorghum.
Rangeland in the watershed comprise about 448,200 acres. Ranches are mostly
cow/calf, sheep, goat and wildlife production operations.
Pastureland in the watershed comprise about 9,500 acres. Much of this is
introduced pasture grass species such as hybrid Bermuda, Klein grass and yellow bluestems. Otherland, including water bodies, roads and urban areas, in the watershed
comprise about 22,400 acres.
