NRCS Texas Recognizes Earth Team Volunteer
Temple, Texas – December 5, 2007. The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has
named Roy Mills of Nacogdoches, Texas, as its Earth Team Volunteer of the year
for 2007.
“Mr. Mills has done an outstanding job of providing information about services
and programs offered by federal, state, and local agencies specifically for
limited resource producers and minority landowners,” said Donald W. Gohmert,
NRCS state conservationist for Texas. “This work has opened the door for many
landowners to take advantage of the conservation technical assistance NRCS
offers.”
Mills began serving as an Earth Team volunteer in 2004 at the NRCS field office
in Nacogdoches, Texas. He is a longtime rancher and a retired agricultural
instructor at Nacogdoches High School. He has also served as chairperson for
Region 3 of the Texas Small Farmers and Ranchers Community Based Organization (CBO)
since July 2004. The CBO focuses on outreach to limited resource and
minority/female agricultural producers. He routinely volunteers about two hours
a week. In 2007, he worked nearly 90 hours for NRCS.
The Earth Team is NRCS’s volunteer workforce. It is open to all persons 14 years
and older who are interested in helping conserve natural resources.
Opportunities for volunteering are available in all NRCS offices throughout
Texas and the nation.
