Wilkins Receives Letter From President

By Robbie Clemens, NRCS district conservationist, Gilmer

Mr. George W. Wilkins, 97, of Gladewater recently received a congratulatory letter from President George W. Bush. Bush’s letter acknowledges Wilkins many years of service for the Upshur-Gregg Soil and Water Conservation District. Bush describes him “as a dynamic and talented individual who strives for excellence in his endeavors.”

“Wilkins has been interested in and an advocate of conservation all his life and has served on the Upshur-Gregg SWCD Board of Directors since 1970. During his 38-year tenure as director, his commitment and support to conservation has never wavered,” said Robbie Clemens, NRCS district conservationist in Gilmer.

Clemens added, “Mr. Wilkins has volunteered countless hours and is relentless in his efforts toward promoting conservation and NRCS conservation programs.” In 1972, he was elected to represent soil and water conservation districts on the East Texas Council of Governments and has served as a member ever since.

His numerous conservation activities include service on the Board of the East Texas Plant Material Center, Texas State Woodland Committee, State Wildlife Clinic and Northeast Texas Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts.

“Conservation has no truer friend than Mr. George W. Wilkins,” Clemens acknowledged.
