NRCS Celebrates EARTH Fest in Amarillo
by Quenna Terry
Residents in Amarillo recently honored Earth Day on April 19 as 2,400
citizens in the area attended Earth Fest at Wildcat Bluff Nature Center.
The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) exhibited at the outdoor event
providing the message that “Everyday is Earth Day” for farmers and ranchers in
Texas, working to provide us with cleaner air, water, and helping to protect our
precious natural resources.
NRCS offered educational information on natural resource conservation and
technical assistance. Conservation Technical Assistance is the foundation of
NRCS and puts professional staff to work on private lands helping communities,
landowners, and units of government assess conservation needs, threats, and
opportunities. Using sound science and technical standards based on unique Texas
conditions, NRCS helps landowners reach their conservation goals.
Earth Fest provided an excellent opportunity for agency awareness. Children and
their parents, teachers, special interest groups, business professionals and
others were interested in a broad range of conservation and energy saving tips.
The city of Amarillo was one partner at Earth Fest providing water conservation
kits. The kit included faucet aerators, dye tablets to detect leaks, water
saving showerhead and Toilet Tummy™ device (a toilet tank water saver that can
be used to tune up water wasting toilets and make them more of a water saving,
efficient toilet). Recycling companies were also on-site giving the general
public a lesson in the importance of recycling measures that can be made at
home.
The day brought together citizens of a community concerned about the overall
environment they live and work in—and through NRCS and the partners involved,
everyone had the opportunity to recognize and celebrate the fact that American
agriculture provides us with abundant food, natural fiber and other
earth-friendly products to American society and the world.
NRCS provides technical and financial assistance to help agricultural producers
and others care for the land. The assistance we provide is based on an
understanding that the land – the landscape as a whole – must be the focus of
conservation. Using this comprehensive approach, the people we help are able to
help the land function as a living sustainable system that provides a high
standard of living and a quality of life for today and for future generations.
