Caney Creek Park Improvement Project

The following photos and captions appeared in the August 30, 2006, issue of the Newton County News. They featured some NRCS-funded hurricane Rita cleanup projects. Thanks to the newspaper for providing the photos and allowing us to reprint them here.

Caney Creek Improvements --The City of Newton, in conjunction with United States Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service, has started a project to control the erosion of the Caney Creek channel. The project will include excavating the logs in the area and installing rock filled basket (Reno Mattresses) on the bank to control the erosion. The project will help to save the walking trail in that area and all the other improvements. The project will take approximately two weeks to complete. This project is funded by a grant from USDA. The second phase of the project will be to repair a ditch on East Davison Street. The USDA NRCS has been of great help to the citizens of Newton. Without their assistance, much of the clean up from the storm damage would not have been possible. Remember to say thanks to these people when you see them. During the construction, 2/10 of a mile of the walking trail will be closed. By walking around the pond and the remainder of the trail that is open, the distance is just over a mile.

Newton enlarges the holding pond in Caney Creek Park. The dirt that was removed from the area was used to fill stump holes created by hurricane Rita tree damage in the parks area. After the dirt was removed, the area was then lined with clay to help with water retention. The dirt removed was used to help to complete another City of Newton, USDA NRCS project that included debris removal in the park area.
