Fannin County Wildlife Seminar and Tour

Story by Randy Henry, Public Affairs Specialist

With the fall season upon us, wildlife management field days are just the event landowners and producers want to attend. The USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Fannin County Service Center co-sponsored a wildlife seminar and tour on Oct. 6, 2006, for more than 50 attendees who heard wildlife and wetland discussions from several conservation professionals.

The seminar and tours were held at Wildwood Farm and Pintail Farms, both near Honey Grove, Texas. Pintail Farms is an exclusive waterfowl hunting club and is situated on Wetland Reserve Program (WRP) land utilizing NRCS management practices, and includes land along the Red River. A.W. and Anna Belle Winningham, owners of Wildwood Farm, welcomed attendees to educate them about wildlife management practices such as food plots, tree trimming, prescribed burns, scrub and tree planting, and improving the wildlife usefulness of pasture land.

Dozens of visitors to the Fannin County Wildlife Seminar collected informational fact sheets provided by NRCS and other co-sponsors on Oct. 6, 2006, near Honey Grove, Texas. Wes Littrell (right), a biologist with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Dept., discusses native and natural plants on Wildwood Farm, while NRCS District Conservationist Randy Moore (left) shows visitors the plant species.

“This wildlife seminar helped our visitors better understand wildlife management practices in their areas, and the tours at Wildwood Farm and Pintail Farms were very informative and excellent for our visitors,” said NRCS Fannin County District Conservationist Randy Moore.

In addition to NRCS, the seminar and tour were co-sponsored by the Fannin Soil and Water Conservation District, Turner Seed Company, Texas Cooperative Extension, and Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPWD).
