What’s Growing in your Water Well?

On May 23, 2006, the Alamo RC & D Area, in partnership with the USDA NRCS and the San Antonio River Authority (SARA), hosted a workshop for private domestic water well owners to learn more about their water wells and ways to reduce the threat of bacterial contamination.

Attendees received a FREE water sample collection kit and bacterial analysis through the SARA’s certified water quality laboratory.
The workshop was held at the Texas Department of Transportation Headquarters in San Antonio.

“What we see is that water well owners don’t think about the quality of their well water until something goes wrong,” stated Bertha Venegas of the NRCS Alamo RC&D. “This workshop reminded well owners of the importance of maintaining and testing their wells on a regular basis.”

The workshop addressed the following topics: well disinfection, well head protection, well plugging, water quality testing and how to collect and submit a water sample.

“Water wells placed too close to septic systems and on lands with combined domestic and agricultural uses risk bacterial contamination,” stated Michael Gonzales, Manager of the SARA’s Environmental Services Department. “This workshop was designed specifically to address these circumstances and to provide domestic well owners the resources they need to protect their water.”
