Water Conservation Day in Kaufman County

By Randy Henry, State Public Affairs Specialist, Arlington

In cooperation with the Kaufman County Texas Agricultural Extension Service, USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) held a Water Conservation Day event in Mabank, Texas. The annual celebration, which had approximately 594 students from the Central Elementary School, ranging from first through sixth grades, enjoyed discussions and displays about conservation. Each class rotated to several different stations and had around 15-20 minutes to listen to the presenters of the demonstrations.

USDA-NRCS District Conservationist Michael Brooks discussed and demonstrated an enviroscape to the students showing non-point and point source pollution within their community. To help support this event, USDA-NRCS Soil Conservation Technician Joel Wardlaw and Earth Team Volunteer Billy Don Davis assisted with the daylong effort to educate the students about the importance of conservation in environmentally sensitive areas.

“This has become an annual event designed to teach our young people about conservation with water and natural resources,” said Brooks. “The enviroscape was used to demonstrate pollution in environmentally sensitive areas within a community. The students really seem to enjoy and retain the information associated with the demonstration.”
