Camp Wacanta Field Day for Marshall Students
By Kathy Dean, Public Affairs Specialist
Matt Feno, Brad Kieschnick, and David Manthei, soil conservationists for the
Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Marshall/Carthage team recently
assisted with outdoor education field days for the Marshall Independent School
District. Students from the third and fifth grades were treated to educational
presentations on soils, plants and their uses, and topics related to forestry.
More than 300 students participated in the field days held at the Camp Fire
Girls Camp Wacanta just north of Marshall.
Feno presented information on forest products, forest management, facts about
the forests, and helped the students identify local forest plants. Feno also led
the students along a nature trail to point out forest plants used for wood
production.
Kieschnick demonstrated soil erosion concerns using the NRCS rainfall simulator.
Kieschnick also identified different soil textures and soil types from the local
work area.
Manthei discussed plants and their uses with the students. Manthei used an array
of forages, native species, and woody plants for the outdoor activities.
Other resource agencies involved in the field days were the Texas Forest Service
and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
