Rural Texas Teens Consider an Agricultural Career

Story by Kathy Dean, Public Affairs Specialist

The Landowners Association of Texas and The Texas Small Farmers & Ranchers Community Based Organization sponsored a workshop for rural Texas teens, grades 7 through 12, on July 15, 2006, in Tyler, Texas. The focus of the workshop was to increase awareness of agricultural career opportunities that exist for minority students today. Participants at the workshop in Tyler.

The Texas Chapters of Professional Black NRCS Employees made up a large part of the panel of agricultural professionals that gave these teens an insight into the diverse jobs available in the agricultural field. This workshop gave these teens a look at today’s jobs and how bright the future can be for them.

Ronald Harris, NRCS district conservationist in Livingston and the current president of the Texas Chapter of Black NRCS Employees, stated, “This is our effort to give back to Texas youth and show them how important agriculture is today.”

More than 65 teens and about 35 adult leaders attended from all over East Texas. Michael Tolbert with the Landowners Association and Wade Ross with the Small Farmer and Ranchers hope to make this an annual event so the teens will consider agricultural jobs for their future.
