Outdoor Safety Focuses on Fifth Graders

By Dee Ann Cameron, Public Affairs Specialist

The annual San Saba Farm Safety Day Camp was held on Thursday, Oct. 12, 2006, at the Civic Center and Mill Pond Park in San Saba, Texas. This event is intended to provide outdoor safety instruction to all fifth grade students in San Saba County. The students are taught how to take responsibility for their safety by increasing awareness of farm hazards, as well as giving them hands-on training to help themselves or others survive a farm incident. Approximately 70 students attended from San Saba, Richland Springs, and Cherokee schools. Among the many local sponsors were Lower Colorado River Authority, San Saba SWCD, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, San Saba Cooperative Extension, and Hill Country RC&D. The San Saba SWCD provided the noon meal of sausage wraps to the attendees and volunteers. Among the topics discussed by speakers on a rotation every 25 minutes were chemical safety, wildlife conservation, firearm safety, ATV safety, and tractor safety. These field days are in cooperation with the Progressive Farmer Safety Day Camps held nationally.
