Reservoir and Recreational Area in Sight for Nacogdoches

Story by Kathy Dean, Public Affairs Specialist

The Attoyac Bayou Watershed Program started in 1964 and includes a multi-purpose recreational area for the Nacogdoches area. The reservoir project has been a partnership between the NRCS and local sponsors, including the Nacogdoches SWCD and Nacogdoches County Commissioners Court. The 1,254-acre site includes 692 acres of surface water impoundment. Arial view of park site.

The project will provide excellent recreational benefits to the surrounding area. Water quality within the reservoir will be exceptional as a clear, cool spring flow feeds the lake, providing numerous water recreational opportunities. A 35-acre park will offer areas for camping, picnicking, swimming, and other recreational opportunities.

“A long awaited project is nearing completion,” said Al Schmidt, District Conservationist, Nacogdoches. “Construction of the dam should be completed in September 2006, with work on the park to start shortly after. Impoundment of the reservoir is scheduled after completion of the park sometime in the spring of 2007.”

The completion of this reservoir will finalize all the projects scheduled through the Attoyac Bayou Watershed Program. Schmidt commented, “Local landowners and individuals are excited about the completion of this multi-purpose project and realize what an asset it will be to the Nacogdoches area.”
