Honoring NRCS Earth Team Volunteer

By Kathy Dean, Public Affairs Specialist

Telzia McCoo, who serves as an Earth Team volunteer for the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), receives an appreciation gift from Kirthell Roberts, NRCS district conservationist in Mt. Pleasant; and Troy Mumphrey, limited resource specialist, in Tyler, Texas.

McCoo is a retired United States Postal employee and a local rancher. In addition, he serves as chairperson for Region 4 of the Texas Small Farmers & Ranchers Community Based Organization (CBO). He has served in this organization since December 2004. Region 4 includes Bowie, Camp, Cass, Franklin, Gregg, Harrison, Hopkins, Marion, Smith, Titus, and Upshur counties.

The CBO focuses on outreach partnering with the local soil and water conservation district and NRCS to improve participation in services and programs through federal, state and local agencies for limited resource producers and/or minority landowners.

Mumphrey assisted McCoo in signing up as an Earth Team volunteer in February 2005. NRCS personnel, Roberts, and Mumphrey have attended meetings and assisted McCoo with CBO outreach efforts.

The mission of the NRCS Earth Team is to provide an effective volunteer workforce within the NRCS to help people conserve, improve and sustain our natural resources and environment.
