Field Day Draws More than 200 People

The Annual Gillespie County Fall Field Day was held Thursday, Oct. 5, 2006, in Fredericksburg, Texas. The event was sponsored jointly by the Gillespie County Soil and Water Conservation District, the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), the Texas Cooperative Extension, and the Grazing Lands Conservation Initiative (GLCI).

Approximately 220 people attended the meeting. Everyone enjoyed a dinner of sausage wraps and chips while they listened to the speakers and learned of new items of interest.

Max Hartmann, special ranger with Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association (TSCRA), spoke about what the TSCRA can do about theft and ways to mark equipment and livestock.

Texas Cooperative Extension Range Specialist Dr. Bob L. Lyons told the audience about new chemicals available, their advantages, and when to use them.

Allen Ersch, director of Gillespie Prescribed Burn Association (GPBA), explained how prescribed burns can help control regrowth after brush clearing, and about an upcoming prescribed burn training class taught by Keith Blair.

Tom Hammer, USDA-NRCS district conservationist in Fredericksburg, addressed the crowd with information about the Environmental Quality Incentives Program. Melissa Grote followed him, talking about the State Brush program.

Ricky Neffendorf, USDA Farm Service Agency, ended the evening talking about the new drought program and County Committee elections.

Attendees enjoyed dinner while they listened to the evening's presentations.
