Livestock Health and Forage Field Day

By Kathy Dean, Public Affairs Specialist

On November 4, 2006, about 30 landowners gathered to attend the Guided Pasture and Hay Meadow Tour on Jim Meley’s farm outside of Katy, Texas.

Wayne H. Thompson, Cooperative Extension Agent in Houston addressed the group about the proper way to take soil samples, grazing heights and management of forages.

Dr. Floron (Buddy) Faries, Extension Veterinary Specialist and Professor spoke about common health problems of beef cattle. He stressed detecting health problems in beef cattle early to prevent or minimize losses by taking steps to keep the problems from recurring or spreading to the rest of the herd.

Raul Villarreal, District Conservationist in Houston, handed out EQIP packets and explained the program to the people attending.
