Hazardous Trash Dump Cleanup in West Harris County

By Kathy Dean, Public Affairs Specialist

Jim Meley, Sam Houston RC&D director, presented a check for almost $10,000 to Harris County Precinct 3 Commissioner Steve Radack to collect trash dumped in western Harris County. More than 440 cubic yards of illegally dumped trash and debris has contributed to the contamination of air and water, a concern for the Harris County Soil and Water Conservation District, which Meley also chairs.

Sam Houston RC&D serves as the third party administrator that works with local organizations, such as Harris County, to implement projects through the Supplemental Environmental Project (SEP) of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).

A SEP is a means by which fines, fees, and penalties for environmental violations may be directed toward environmentally beneficial projects. Through a SEP, a respondent in an enforcement matter can choose to invest penalty dollars in improving the environment, rather than paying into the Texas general revenue fund.

For more information, contact the Harris County Soil and Water Conservation District at 713-397-6996 or by email at cath2453@earthlink.net. You may also contact the Sam Houston RC&D at 936-890-4884.
