Agricultural Field Day

By Kathy Dean, Public Affairs Specialist, Houston

NRCS has a long-standing partnership with Prairie View A&M (PVA&M) University. On May 20, 2006 NRCS participated in PVA&M University’s Career Day for High School Students and Agricultural Field Day. The theme was “Sustaining the Future of Agriculture.”

The day-long event featured displays and an agenda full of concurrent sessions. NRCS hosted a booth featuring Conservation Technical Assistance. About 350 people, students, landowners and professionals, browsed the booths seeking information from federal, state and local agencies, and private businesses.
George Martin, Program Manager for Zone 4, gave a talk on NRCS and the Farm Bill Programs available to landowners.
The morning sessions covered agriculture and natural emergencies and an explanation of the Goat Kid Giveaway Program for parents and recipients of goat kids.

The Honorable Glenn Hegar, Texas House of Representatives, a former board member of the Harris County Soil and Water Conservation District, and active farmer delivered the luncheon speech.

“Working in the agricultural field goes beyond just being a farmer,” Hegar told the crowd. “I have worked with NRCS and know how much it has helped me become a more productive producer. When a product leaves my farm or any other farm, it goes through the hands of many people before the consumer purchases the final product.”

Hegar suggested to the high school kids that “Other jobs in agriculture include teaching, doing research, or working for agencies like NRCS or Extension.”
Craig Page, District Conservationist, Hempstead, TX staffed a booth to discuss careers in agriculture with the crowd.
The afternoon session included speakers discussing Goat Parasites Control, Sustainable Agriculture Funding and USDA Programs, and a tour of the PVA&M research, demonstration plots and facilities associated with the teaching, research and extension outreach components of the College of Agriculture and Human Sciences. George Martin, Program Manager for Zone 4, gave a talk on NRCS and the Farm Bill Programs available to landowners.

Other concurrent sessions focused on Goat Parasites, General Goat Management and Reproduction Management in Goats, Selection Fitting, Feeding and Showing, and Forage Production for livestock.
