Texans Weigh in on 2007 Farm Bill

Agriculture is the second largest industry in Texas, so it’s no wonder Texans from across the state traveled to Lubbock to attend the USDA Farm Bill Forum. On October 5, concerned farmers, ranchers and other stakeholders delivered their comments to USDA Secretary Mike Johanns and U.S. representatives for the 2007 Farm Bill. This event in Texas is one of a series of listening sessions the USDA is holding across the country for Secretary Johanns to gain input prior to the development of the next Farm Bill. Secretary Johanns listened intently as producers from throughout Texas made their comments.

Texas State Directors, NRCS State Conservationist Larry D. Butler, Farm Service Agency Executive Director John Fuston and Rural Development Executive Director Brian Daniel attended the forum.

“Texas was well represented by individuals from throughout the state” Dr. Butler said, “The Forum provided an opportunity for policy makers to hear directly from the landowners and producers.”

The public filled the Texas Tech museum’s Helen Devitt Jones Auditorium. Over 600 plus attendees were present.
